Maine income tax in 2026

Maine has a graduated income tax with rates from 5.8% to 9.15% for single filers, spread across 4 brackets. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower your Maine taxable income as well as your federal taxable income. Maine then subtracts its own standard deduction of $15,700 for single filers ($31,400 married filing jointly). Personal exemptions: $5,300 single, $10,600 married filing jointly. Tax credits subtracted from the tax: $305 per dependent.

Maine rules and notes

  • New for 2026: a 2% surcharge on Maine taxable income above $1,000,000 (single), $750,000 (MFS) or $1,500,000 (joint/HOH), enacted in the 2026 supplemental budget. It is shown here as a 9.15% top bracket (7.15% + 2%).
  • The 2026 brackets are inflation-indexed. Standard deduction is $15,700 single/MFS, $23,550 HOH, $31,400 joint (MRS revised schedule, May 20, 2026, after Maine conformed to the higher standard deduction). Extra for 65+/blind: $2,050 unmarried, $1,650 married.
  • Standard (or itemized) deduction phases out for Maine AGI over $102,250 single/MFS (gone at $177,250), $153,400 HOH (gone at $265,900) and $204,550 joint (gone at $354,550).

  • Dependents get a refundable dependent exemption tax credit, not a deduction: $305 per dependent ($610 under age 6) in 2025. It phases out by $20 per $500 of AGI over $100,000 single, $125,000 HOH, $150,000 joint or $75,000 MFS. The 2026 inflation-adjusted credit had not been published and may be slightly higher.
  • Maine decoupled from the federal tips, overtime, senior and car-loan-interest deductions. The pension income deduction is up to $49,824 for 2026 (per the 2026 1040ES-ME).

How your Maine paycheck is calculated

  1. Gross pay for the year is your salary, or your hourly wage × hours × 52 plus overtime at 1.5×.
  2. Pre-tax deductions such as a traditional 401(k), health premiums and HSA contributions are subtracted before federal income tax.
  3. Federal income tax uses the 2026 brackets, your filing status’s standard deduction ($16,100 single) and credits for children and other dependents.
  4. Social Security and Medicare take 6.2% (up to $184,500 of wages) and 1.45%.
  5. Maine income tax is figured on the annual amount using the rules above, then divided across your paychecks.

We divide the annual totals by your number of paychecks, which is how a correctly completed 2026 Form W-4 is designed to withhold. Your employer’s withholding tables may differ by a few dollars per check. For your full-year tax bill, use the income tax calculator.
