How we calculate the dates
Nothing here is copied from a calendar. Fixed-date holidays use their month and day; weekday rules (such as the fourth Thursday in November) are computed from the first day of the month; and Easter uses the Anonymous Gregorian algorithm for Western Easter, which follows the ecclesiastical rules described by the U.S. Naval Observatory. All math runs on whole-number dates, so the result does not depend on time zones or daylight saving time. How are the days until a holiday counted?
We subtract today’s date from the holiday’s date, so the day before the holiday shows 1 day and the holiday itself shows 0. Business days count Monday through Friday from today up to the day before the holiday, minus any federal holiday on its observed date. The numbers update automatically for your own date and time zone when the page loads.
Which of these holidays are federal holidays?
6 of the 12 holidays on this page are legal public holidays under 5 U.S.C. 6103: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day. Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day are not federal holidays. The federal list also includes Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Juneteenth, Columbus Day and Veterans Day.
Why do some holidays change date every year?
Some holidays are set by a weekday rule rather than a date. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, Memorial Day the last Monday in May, Labor Day the first Monday in September, Mother’s Day the second Sunday in May and Father’s Day the third Sunday in June. Easter follows the ecclesiastical moon and can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25.
What happens when a federal holiday falls on a weekend?
For most federal employees, a holiday that falls on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one that falls on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after, according to OPM. When New Year’s Day is on a Saturday, the observed holiday is Friday, December 31 of the previous year. Private employers set their own policies.
