Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May. Federal law (36 U.S.C. 117) states that “the second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day” and asks the President to issue a proclamation calling on government officials and the public to display the flag. It is always on a Sunday, so its calendar date changes every year: it can be as early as May 8 and as late as May 14. In 2027 it is on May 9; in 2028 it is on May 14.
It is a national observance rather than one of the 11 legal public holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103; since it is always on a Sunday, it does not create a day off.
