About Memorial Day
Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, as set by both 5 U.S.C. 6103 and 36 U.S.C. 116, which also asks the President to issue a proclamation each year calling on Americans to observe the day. It is always on a Monday, so its calendar date changes every year: it can be as early as May 25 and as late as May 31. In 2027 it is on May 31; in 2028 it is on May 29.
Because it is always a Monday, Memorial Day never needs an observed date: it creates a three-day weekend for federal employees every year. Private employers decide their own holiday schedules (U.S. Department of Labor).
