Age by Birth Year

Subtract your birth year from the current year to get the age you turn this year, then subtract one if your birthday hasn't happened yet. In 2026, someone born in 1975 turns 51, so they are 50 before their birthday and 51 after it. Use the calculator above for an exact age in years, months and days.

Someone born in 1980 turns 46 in 2026. Until their birthday they are 45. People born in 1980 are the youngest members of Generation X under Pew Research Center's definition (1965–1980), and their Social Security full retirement age is 67.

Someone born in 2000 turns 26 in 2026 and is 25 before their birthday. They belong to Generation Z, which Pew Research Center says begins with people born in 1997. 2000 was a leap year, so a few people born that year celebrate on February 29.

Age is counted in completed years: you only add a year when the anniversary of your birth date arrives. So during any calendar year there are two possible ages for one birth year. Someone born in 1990 is 35 from January 1, 2026 until the day before their birthday, and 36 from their birthday through December 31.

It is 65 for people born in 1937 or earlier, rises by two months per birth year to 65 and 10 months for 1942, is 66 for 1943 through 1954, rises again by two months a year to 66 and 10 months for 1959, and is 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. January 1 birthdays use the previous year's age.
